Een jaar geleden werd het Maagdenhuis hardhandig ontruimd. De beroepsbestuurders in het College van Bestuur bleken consequent niet in staat deze universiteit op een goede manier vorm te geven. Na de ontruiming is voorzitter Louise Gunning opgestapt, maar direct bleek dat de beroepsbestuurders in het College niet het enige probleem waren: na het vertrek van Gunning trad de Raad van Toezicht naar voren. Nog meer beroepsbestuurders die zich – ondanks de naam “toezichthouders” – actief bemoeien met beleid en vanaf minuut één alle democratisering van de universiteit hebben tegen gewerkt. Zo lijkt het vertrek van Hans Amman voort te komen uit een conflict met de voorzitter van de Raad van Toezicht (Atzo Nicolaï) over de bestuurlijke samenwerking van de UvA en HvA. De Raad van Toezicht heeft bestuurders benoemd via een intransparante procedure waar wij het in het geheel niet mee eens zijn. We hebben vanaf het begin geprobeerd via de formele kanalen de procedure te veranderen, maar werden daarin structureel tegengewerkt door de Raad van Toezicht (lees hierover meer op https://humanitiesrally.com/2016/03/24/open-brief-aan-de-rvt)
Deze Raad van Toezicht past niet op de UvA, en het instituut van de Raad van Toezicht past niet op een universiteit: wij academici zijn goed in staat zélf onze universiteit vorm te geven, daarvoor hebben we geen beroepsbestuurders nodig. Sterker nog, die werken ons alleen maar tegen. Daarom roepen wij om het vertrek van de Raad van Toezicht en alle beroepsbestuurders van de Universiteit.

A year ago the Maagdenhuis was violently evicted. The professional managers in the Executive Board consequently showed they were not capable of managing this university in the right way. After the eviction president of the Executive Board Louise Gunning quit, but it immediatly became clear the professional managers in the CvB weren’t the only problem: after Gunning’s resignation the Supervisory Board stepped in. Even more professional managers who – although their name is “supervisors” – are actively meddling in making policy and who have been working against the democratization of the university from the first moment. The resignation of Hans Amman (vice president of the Exectutive Board) seems to be a result of a conflict with the president of the Supervisory Board (Atzo Nicolaï) concerning the managerial merging of the UvA and HvA. The Supervisory Board has also nominated new members for the Executive Board in an intransparent procedure that we have opposed from the start. From the start we have tried to alter that procedure through the official ways, but were structurally opposed by the Supervisory Board (read more about that here: https://humanitiesrally.com/2016/03/24/open-brief-aan-de-rvt).
This Supervisory Board is not suited for the University of Amsterdam, and the institution of a Supervisory Board isn’t suited for a university: we, academics, are very well capable of creating our university. Indeed, the professional managers are only working against us. Therefore, we call for the resignation of this Supervisory Board and the abolishment of the institution Supervisory Board and all professional managers.
